Who Needs a Studio?
This album was recorded using a Tascam 4-track, a Mackie PA mixer, a Digitech rackmount effects processor, and a Marshall Supervibe stereo chorus pedal. With all these fun toys at our disposal, we tried to make the album different from what you would normally here at one of our shows, wherein we usually just stick to two vocals and two acoustic guitars. We recorded in just four days at Rob's house, so while the album isn't perfect, it was made with just as much passion and dedication as any band out there today. Here are a few tid-bits about the songs that make "How's Your Face" the must-have album of 2001:

Carol of the Bells
Everything on the cd was run through the Marshall chorus to give it that stereo sound, so we won't mention it everytime. The crazy electric lead, played by BJ, was run through the Digitech. BJ also played the bass track, while Rob played the rhythm acoustic and electric. This is our interpretation of a classic Christmas carol.
Truly
This song was written by Rob. Rob plays the acoustic and rhythm electric and sings lead vocals. BJ sings back-up vocals and provides the lead guitar and bass. This song seems to be one of the fan favorites.
Sour Girl, Kryptonite
THESE ARE NOT OUR SONGS! We do not want to take any credit for writing these smash hits. We just like to play them ;-). Sour Girl, by the Stone Temple Pilots, consisted of Rob on the acoustic and lead vocals, and BJ on the bass and background vocals. Kryptonite, by 3 Doors Down, had BJ on lead vocals and bass, and Rob on acoustic and background vocals.
Pictures of a Night Sky, Into the Abyss
BJ wanted to add an instrumental song to the album, which he named "Into the Abyss." Rob was jealous, so he wrote one too :-). "The Abyss" is one acoustic and then a looping electric run through the digitech. "Pictures" is just two electrics which was written in about 5 minutes.

The Burn
"The Burn," written by Rob, took an entire day to record. It is a monster of a song reaching upwards of 7 minutes. BJ plays the lead electric, while Rob sings lead and backing vocals, plays two acoustic guitars, and the piano (to the best of his ability.)
No Excuses, The Needle and the Damage Done
THESE ARE ALSO NOT OUR SONGS. "No Excuses," written by Alice in Chains, consists of Rob on lead vocals, acoustic guitar and the lead solo, while BJ adds backing vocals and a bass line. "Needle," a Neil Young tune, contains Rob on lead vocals and rhythm guitar with BJ adding a lead acoustic guitar.
Walk On
"Walk On" is the first collaborative effort from Herbal Affair. A normally grueling process, the consolidation of musical ideas from Rob and BJ proves to be worth the effort on this rock/jazz/blues tune. Rob sings lead vocals on this song, while BJ adds backing vocals as well as the acoustic rhythm guitar, bass and electric lead.
Take On Me
THIS IS ALSO NOT OUR SONG! This is a classic 80's tune from the great band A-ha. Rob sings the lead vocals and play the acoustic and BJ plays the two other electrics and sings the cool backing vocals. "Take on me!"

The Last Eve of June, How's Your Face
There's not much to say about "How's Your Face" except that it was written in about 3 minutes. We recorded both parts at once, BJ playing guitar and Rob singing. "June" has been with us for the longest amount of time. It was actually written before Herbal Affair got together by Rob but it has come to be the staple song of the band. A lot went into recording this one, Rob sings both vocal parts, and plays the acoustic and the rhthym electric. BJ throws in the lead guitar and bass tracks. It has a real spacey kinda feel to it. It is groovy in a far out way.

The Live Stuff
The live stuff is... live. It was recorded at Stonehill College Radio WSHL 91.3. We had a radioshow there and thought it would be cool to play some tunes on the air. I think the tunes turned out pretty well considering our show was the 4-7 am shift every wednesday and friday morning. "Something's Always Wrong" was written by Toad the Wet Sprocket and "If You Could Only See" was written by Tonic.
